Donor Profile: Carol Summerhays

Carol Summerhays, DDS exemplifies giving back. In addition to serving on the Foundation’s Board of Directors, Dr. Summerhays is actively involved in several other committees and councils, including serving as President-Elect of CDA. But, when asked about what she’s really passionate about, Dr. Summerhays quickly points to the CDA Foundation and its successful efforts in establishing programs that provide greater access to underserved populations. “There is no reason for anyone in California to be suffering with tooth pain because of an inability to access dental care,” she says “Many dentists volunteer countless hours in their own practices and through community programs to provide treatment to those who otherwise would not receive care. While most dentists have the desire, all may not have the time to volunteer and are looking for avenues to give back. The CDA Foundation provides a way to contribute beyond the care we can personally provide to patients. I can’t think of a better organization to give to than the CDA Foundation – overseen by volunteer dentists and run by a highly qualified staff.”
Dr. Summerhays commitment to the Foundation was again made evident by her recent gift as a Friend of the CDA Foundation at the $10,000 level. The Friends of the CDA Foundation is an annual gift club that supports the CDA Foundation Grant Program.
“My hope is to start a Humanitarian Award to honor dentists who are selflessly providing free treatment year after year – giving back to their communities and really making a difference. These unsung heroes represent the heart of our profession.”
It is important says Dr.Summerhays to plant seeds of philanthropy now – to leave a legacy. “We need to plant the seeds now, nurture them and grow them, so that for generations to come people will benefit from the fruits of our labor. It is our vision that the Foundation and its programs will continue providing care for and changing lives of the underserved people of California, long after we are all gone. That is what I am truly passionate about.”
