In 2006, the Latinos for Dental Careers fund, whose mission is to increase the number of Latinos in the dental profession, partnered with the CDA Foundation to establish a scholarship fund that supports dental students, dental hygiene students and international dental students of Latino descent. The LDC scholarship fund offers $1,000 scholarships to qualified and deserving students, students like Adriana Ustarez one of the 14 selected recipients.

“To me, being of Latino descent signifies never forgetting where one comes from,” said Ustarez. “I do not only remember Bolivia, but also I have in my mind the poor communities of Los Angeles in which I grew up in. Coming from an economically and educationally disadvantaged community, I have first hand experienced the lack of resources, and the lack of positive role models. It is my sincere hope that with my dental degree I can contribute to these communities and work with others to improve them.”

Fabiola Lienda, another of the recent recipients of the LDC award, articulated the hearts of the other student applicants saying, “I have a great advantage and I am proud to speak Spanish, because our community is in need of professionals who can communicate with them to explain and teach them how to take care of their own health and their families, not only oral health but also general health.”
