2008 Grant Recipients
Forty organizations submitted proposals to the CDA Foundation Grant Program during the August 31, 2008 funding cycle. The Grant Selection Committee reviewed proposals and selected the following organizations as recipients of 2008 CDA Foundation Grants. We wish to congratulate:
- San Gabriel Valley Foundation for Dental Health - $10,000
The San Gabriel Valley Foundation for Dental Health’s Outreach Education Program works closely with local community representatives to provide dental screenings to at least 5,000 economically disadvantaged children and important educational programs to at least 1,200 children and adults in the community. Additionally, they will provide preventive and restorative dental treatment to at least 1,000 economically disadvantaged children ages 2 - 14 years. - St. Mary’s Interfaith Community Services - $10,650
It is important to St. Mary’s Interfaith Community Services to provide access to the best possible treatment for their community patients. This grant is to add an additional dental assistant and purchase dental supplies for the clinic. This will help ensure that the clinic has enough support staff and supplies to enable its dentists to provide effective care, including oral health education, prevention and restoration. Additionally, this is anticipated to increase in the number of clients by 10%, and decrease access to care challenges at the clinic. The clinic will see and treat at least 2,215 underserved individuals during the grant period.. It is with the support of the volunteer professionals, like the clinic dentists and staff that they are able to continuously work toward enhancing and expanding their services. - University of Southern California School of Dentistry - $7,750
This grant will help the University of Southern California-Union Rescue Mission (USC-URM) Dental Clinic Restorative Care program to expand dental services to include dental prosthetic appliances (full and partial dentures) to replace missing front teeth at no cost to homeless individuals who have completed a rehabilitation program and are actively seeking employment. Services will be provided by senior dental students under direct supervision of dental faculty from USC School of Dentistry & community volunteer dentists. Additionally, the grant will help fund expenses related to the distribution of 10,000 toothbrush/hygiene kits to homeless shelters in an effort to increase oral health care awareness among this population. - Sacramento District Dental Foundation - $10,000
Smiles for BIG Kids is a parent program to the already established and successful Smiles for Kids (SFK) program. While SFK addresses the dental needs of children, Smiles for BIG Kids will promote oral health to at least 200 underserved adults in Sacramento, Placer, Yolo, Amador, and El Dorado Counties, especially targeting the needs of the community’s low-income elderly population as well as the parents of children served by the SFK program. The program provides donated dental treatment to adults, age 19 to 80, who meet the program’s eligibility requirements and are in need of urgent care, as well as education on maintaining proper oral health. - Desert AIDS Project - $10,000
In response to community need, Desert AIDS Project (DAP) is renovating an unused portion of their facility to accommodate a three-chair dental facility. The dental clinic will link seamlessly with the medical facility sharing administrative and support staff to provide comprehensive health care. This collocation of services will increase patient access to oral health care among their many other services, offering patient-participatory care plans for diagnostic, prophylactic and therapeutic services all in one location. Currently, the patients primarily access oral health services only when an acute need presents. Through the dental clinic the patients will have less need of acute care interventions, reducing the overall cost of care and increasing the number of the number of HIV+ people accessing oral health care. - Fresh Start Surgical Gifts - $15,600
Fresh Start Surgical Gifts provides free dental health education, and preventive, restorative, and orthodontic treatments for at least 325 disadvantaged children who are faced with complex dental conditions as a result of a facial deformity. They conduct at least 13 dental clinics per year, where at least 25 children are treated at each. More than two dozen volunteer dentists, orthodontists, hygienists and assistants help provide treatment, dental health education, as well as boost the children's self-esteem with a kind and considerate bedside manner. - Assistance League of Pomona Valley - $5,500
Assistance League of Pomona Valley Dental Center will provide approximately 3,000 dental treatments to 500 children, including oral hygiene education, exams, fluoride treatments, x-rays, and all other treatment needed to bring each patient to satisfactory dental health. Other treatments may include fillings, root canals, space maintainers or stainless steel crowns. The Assistance League will also conduct 100-200 pre-Kindergarten dental screenings, a check-up requirement mandated by the State of California. - Glendale Healthy Kids - $5,500
The First Grade Dental Education Program is a comprehensive dental education program presented to 2,000 first grade students in the Glendale Unified School District. It is implemented by volunteer health educators who teach, by means of an interactive method using videos, puppets, and other age-appropriate educational aids, three core lessons: dental care and hygiene basics, nutrition, and what to expect during a visit with a dentist. Additionally, they provide the Tots 'n Teeth Program, a preschool dental education program targeting 1,000 preschoolers, 2-5 year olds, in various private, public, and Head Start preschools in the community. Both programs place a heavy emphasis on parent education and involvement.
