Application Guidelines

The Dr. Arthur A. Dugoni Faculty Award supports faculty development in dental programs affiliated with California’s dental schools, through awards to dental professionals and other scientists in a faculty position.

Eligibility
Applicants may include junior faculty members, visiting scientists, and guest lecturers, and must have a history as member of faculty. Applicants must hold full or part time teaching positions and must be affiliated with a dental program associated with one of California’s dental schools. These programs may include, but are not limited to, dentistry, dental hygiene, dental assisting, or other dental educational programs. Recipients shall contribute to the scholarly and creative activity of the school through direct contact with students and add to the enrichment of the dental program with which they are affiliated.

Applicants from all fields of study or dental specialties that enhance or support dental programs will be considered. Applicants must be US citizens or provide proof of eligibility to work in the US.

Award of Funds
Recipients are only eligible to receive a one time scholarship award of up to a $5,000. Funds may be used for, but are not limited to, travel, conferences, research, materials, supplies, or academic projects.

Award Application Process
Individuals who apply for this scholarship shall submit the following items (scan documents into appropriate file format for uploading as attachment) with the online application no later than March 31:

  • Up to two letters of recommendation from individuals who can speak to their qualifications and interest in dental education;
  • Proof of employment or employment offer/tender; and
  • Curriculum Vitae or professional summary (3 pages maximum).

Selection Process
The CDA Foundation Scholarship Committee strives to select faculty engaged in preparing students for a professional education that lays the groundwork for lasting achievement and responsible leadership in their careers and communities. Priority will be given to applications reflecting Dr. Dugoni's vision of excellence in teaching and professional development which include the following:

Leadership: Individuals that participate in activities beyond the scope of their teaching assignments serve as role models for their students and possess values that influence future involvement in the profession. This may include leadership roles in organized dentistry, a specialty or ethnic group, the American Dental Education Association, American Association for Dental Research, their alma mater, or other associations.

Creativity/Innovation: Individuals that anticipate tomorrow's needs and responds to those needs through visionary or innovative teaching methods designed to move dental education forward and motivate or engage students in their own professional growth. This may include new uses for technology, competency based curriculum development, applied research techniques that benefit patients or enhance the quality of care, and inventive instruction models.
 
Collaboration: Individuals that reach beyond the classroom/clinic to create partnerships and unions strengthen the student's experience and involves others in the future of dental education. This can include other schools, community groups, organized dentistry, corporate or business assistance, grant writing and individuals.

Philanthropic Spirit: Giving back of one's time, talent and resources to the profession and the community are a vital part of a full life. Award recipients value philanthropy and assume an active role in sharing the bounty in their life with others.
 
Compassion/Integrity: Dr. Dugoni once said, "It will not do just to train the head and hands and leave the heart out". Individuals that are treated with respect and dignity learn compassion, the need for tolerance and cooperation, and to take responsibility for their lives, communities and world in which they live.
 
The CDA Foundation Scholarship Committee will select the scholarship recipient after reviewing the applicant pool. The CDA Foundation Board of Directors shall ratify the committee's recommendation(s).

Award
Scholarship awards will be presented at a CDA Board of Trustees meeting. Dr. Arthur A. Dugoni Faculty Award recipients will be recognized in CDA and CDA Foundation publications.

Accountability/Reporting
Each award recipient is encouraged to communicate with Dr. Dugoni and share their accomplishments directly with him. At the conclusion of one year, recipients will be requested to submit a brief narrative of the year’s activities to the CDA Foundation.
